History of the Microbrew / Brewpub

Microbreweries and brewpubs as we know them today are relatively new to the brewing scene. It wasn't until the late 1970's and early 1980's that laws were passed to permit brewing for on-site retail sales. Prior to these legislations, federal law governing beer distribution prohibited brewing and selling at the same location. As a result, microbreweries and brewpubs have been allowed to grow for the first time since the pre-prohibition era.
